How to install Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in 86Box (software)

DOS 6.22

Default install, 3 disk, Norwegian language and keyboard….


CD-ROM drivers

MSCDEX 2.23 Installer (incl. VIDE-CDD).img A: Install C:\CDROM copy XTRA\VCDD215.SYS C:\CDROM

Edit config.sys

Replace GSCDROM.SYS with VCDD215.SYS REMOVE /v at the end of the line


WfW 3.11

NOTE! In the video they use disk images. I will use the CDROM and mount the folder with all the install files as a CDROM E: setup Custom (C) ONLY CHANGE keyboard layout, Display etc comes later

GUI part of the setup

Uncheck everything EXCEPT “Set Up Printers”

Printers

NEC Colormate PS/40

Network, SKIP IT, we will setup this later
REBOOT

Display Drivers

Insert the Display Driver disk (img). In Windows File Manager: A: , dbl-click install.exe Click Install button Click OK

Display Driver config

Select Monitor Model: User Defined

User Defined Monitor Modes

Choose all 60Hz modes UP TO 1280x1024 (this is max resolution in True Color Mode) Up to 1152x864 = True Color, 16.7M colors 1280x1024 = High Color, 64k colors Click OK

InControl Tools Configuration

I choose 1280x1024. Make sure Desktop Size and Viewport Size is the same (1280x1024) Set Color Depth to 64k. (Maybe test lower res and True Color later) Click OK Choose “I will install later” (Hotkeys nonsense) Click “Restart Windows”

Known Issue after driver install

Windows freezes, known bug. Do a HARD RESET of the machine.


Sound Drivers

THIS IS DONE IN DOS, exit Windows Insert Disk1, Install.exe “Begin Installation” Choose the hard drive with Windows installed Check that the Base and MIDI addresses are the same as the ones set in the hardware setup Exit Reboot (do a HARD RESET) Start Windows Click OK Restart Windows

SB16 Mixer

Set Master Volume to MAX Set R/L Gain to 8 Save and Exit the prog


Network Adapter

NOTE!

During driver install the WfW “ISO” (the folder in point 4) must be mounted because the install routine need files from the original WfW install. In Program Manager, got to “Network”, “Network Setup” “Networks”, “Install Microsoft Windows Network”, click “OK”

Drivers

Click on “Drivers” “Add Adapter” “Unlisted” (insert Realtek disk) A:\WFW311 Install adapter etc….

NOTE

Driver install was crashing, switched OFF “Dynamic Recompiling” in the hardware settings, and the install worked.

TCP/IP install

Network Drivers, Add Protocol, insert the TCP/IP disk, install the stack.

SLiRP - manual IP, DNS etc
IP: 10.0.2.15
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
OK, OK etc, 
Reboot / Hard Reset
In Windows open DOS-prompt, "ping www.google.com"

END…… REMEMBER USE “HARD RESET” if stuff hangs……
